Star Island Day Visit & Narrated Harbor Cruise

Star Island Day Visit & Narrated Harbor Cruise

Two vessels. One unforgettable journey. A whole day to explore one of New England’s most storied islands.

Looking to get away for the day without actually leaving New Hampshire? Step aboard our Star Island Day Visit & Portsmouth Harbor Tour, a beautifully paced escape that combines a narrated maritime journey through the Seacoast's rich past with nearly four hours to explore Star Island at your own rhythm.

Your adventure begins on our nimble vessel, the M/V Challenger, as we cruise along the winding Piscataqua River, where naval history, tugboats, and salt-weathered buildings paint a vivid picture of the region’s working waterfront. As the city skyline fades behind you, our experienced narrator will share stories of the Portsmouth Harbor and Isles of Shoals, revealing centuries of history, legends, and local color.

The destination is Star Island, one of the most iconic islands in the Isles of Shoals, known for its rocky beauty, timeless atmosphere, and deep historical roots.

Once ashore, you'll have approximately 3.75 hours to enjoy the island. You’re invited to join our optional guided walking tour, where you’ll discover the historic Gosport Village, a 17th-century fishing outpost, and landmarks like the Stone Chapel, the Caswell Cemetery, and the John Smith Monument—the tallest gravestone in New Hampshire. You’ll also hear stories of pirates like Blackbeard, early explorers such as Captain John Smith, and the heyday of the Oceanic Hotel, a Victorian-era summer resort that still stands today.

Prefer to explore on your own? No problem. Pack a lunch and relax by the tide pools, stroll the peaceful trails, visit the gift shop, or simply soak in the views from the Oceanic Hotel’s wraparound porch. Whether you’re after quiet reflection or curious exploration, the island offers something for everyone.

When it’s time to return, you’ll board the M/V Thomas Laighton, our larger and most iconic vessel, for a smooth cruise back to Portsmouth. It’s the perfect time to relax, reflect, and watch the coastline come back into view.

Star Island’s visitor fee is included in your ticket price. There’s no need to print anything—we’ll check you in by name when you arrive.

This is a full-day experience ideal for families, solo travelers, history lovers, artists, and anyone looking for a meaningful escape close to home. Step aboard and let Star Island become your favorite day trip on the New Hampshire coast.

About the M/V Challenger

The M/V Challenger is our smaller, more intimate, single level vessel.  The Challenger is perfect for quieter sailings, scenic transfers to Star Island, and is flexible for private bookings. With an open design and shaded seating, it offers excellent visibility and a comfortable ride through Portsmouth Harbor and out to the Isles of Shoals. While smaller in scale, it retains all the charm of our coastal cruise experience and is frequently used for the outbound portion of our Star Island Day Trips. The Challenger can also be reserved for private charters, with limited availability throughout the season.
